Human Resistance to AI Grows Amid Environmental, Ethical, and Creative Concerns

While AI adoption continues to surge across industries, a growing cohort of professionals is actively resisting its use, citing ethical, environmental, and philosophical concerns. Individuals like Sabine Zetteler, who runs a London-based communications agency, reject AI not due to a lack of understanding but out of conviction. 

Goldman Sachs estimates that a ChatGPT query consumes nearly 10 times the electricity of a Google search. For Achery, AI contradicts the human-centered mission of her business and raises sustainability concerns rarely acknowledged by the broader public. 

Meanwhile, Sierra Hansen, a public affairs professional in Seattle, worries about AI diminishing critical thinking. She believes that outsourcing daily decision-making to tools like AI Copilot erodes our natural problem-solving skills and cognitive independence. 

Despite these concerns, some initially resistant professionals have compelled to integrate AI into their workflows. The rise of AI agents underscores a critical challenge: balancing technological efficiency with the preservation of human agency, creativity, and purpose. 

For some, the choice to opt out may still exist—but increasingly, the AI tide is proving difficult to resist.
