GPT-5 Launch Sparks Unprecedented Backlash Over AI Changes
OpenAI’s release of its new GPT-5 model on August 7 sparked one of the biggest user revolts in ChatGPT’s history. The backlash prompted CEO Sam Altman to issue a rare public apology and reverse several unpopular changes.
The controversy centers around OpenAI’s decision to remove access to all previous models in ChatGPT without warning. Users had built workflows around specific behaviors and tones of older models like GPT-4o. Although API users typically get advance deprecation notices, regular ChatGPT users received none. This left marketing professionals, researchers, and developers scrambling.
Many criticized GPT-5 for delivering shorter and more formal replies. They missed the creative nuance and emotional tone offered by previous models.
Several key issues fueled user frustration:
-
Loss of Model Choice: Older models disappeared overnight, breaking specialized use cases.
-
Usage Limits: The “Thinking” mode in GPT-5 capped Plus subscribers at 200 messages per week.
-
Performance Concerns: Model routing errors caused responses to default to weaker versions.
-
Tone Shift: Users said GPT-5 felt abrupt and impersonal compared to GPT-4o’s warmer style.
The situation escalated after OpenAI was accused of showing misleading performance charts during the launch. Some users reacted emotionally, saying they viewed GPT-4o as a collaborator or even a companion. In protest, many canceled subscriptions or turned to competitors like Google and Anthropic.
In response, OpenAI pledged several changes. GPT-4o access will return for Plus users. GPT-5’s message limit will double. The company also promised clearer model labeling and improved transparency.
Altman acknowledged that OpenAI “underestimated” how attached users had become to GPT-4o’s personality and capabilities.
Despite those promises, GPT-5 remains the only available model in ChatGPT as of Monday. Many users are still waiting for the return of the tools they trusted.
