AI “Workslop” Threatens Workplace Productivity | Eastgate

A new Harvard Business Review and Stanford Media Lab study has highlighted a growing workplace challenge: “workslop,” or AI-generated content that appears polished but lacks depth, accuracy, or originality. As generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini become embedded in daily workflows, many employees are over-relying on these tools, producing outputs that frustrate colleagues and erode trust.

The study found that 40% of employees reported receiving AI-generated workslop, leading to negative perceptions of coworkers who rely too heavily on machine outputs. Such workers are often seen as less creative, reliable, and capable, with some cases impacting performance reviews and client relationships.

AI tools have rapidly spread across professional environments, assisting with:

  • Summaries, reports, and presentations
  • Research and decision-making
  • Coding, graphics, and content generation

While these tools save time, they also generate cookie-cutter text and factual errors, sometimes without users realizing it. OpenAI’s GPT-5 model aims to reduce hallucinations, but accuracy remains a concern.

Experts stress that AI should complement, not replace, human intelligence. Effective use involves editing, fact-checking, and personalizing AI drafts rather than submitting raw outputs. ChatGPT itself warns users to treat it as a research assistant, not a ghostwriter, urging refinement and originality.

To combat workslop, Harvard researchers recommend:

  • Training employees on when and how to responsibly use AI
  • Mandating fact-checking and rewriting of AI outputs
  • Encouraging brainstorming and in-person collaboration
  • Reinforcing that creative context and human expertise remain irreplaceable

As AI adoption accelerates, the risk of low-quality work infiltrating professional settings grows. The findings underscore a critical shift: success with AI depends not just on access to advanced tools but on disciplined, thoughtful integration into workplace practices.
